M. Ravel Ma mère l’Oye: 5 pièces enfantines

Julien is a diligent artist with solid musicianship and a keen intellect.” Paavo Järvi

Queyras gives an intimately conversational account of the Cello Concerto, never turning it into a virtuoso vehicle for its own sake, and persuades the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra under Pablo Heras-Casado to give him equally gentle, refined support. In the D minor Trio, both his and Faust’s supplely expressive phrasing goes a long way towards mitigating Melnikov’s tendency to over-assertiveness, too, though the pianist’s playing is by no means one-dimensional and he conjures some delicate, silvery sonorities from the 1847 Streicher instrument that he has used throughout the series.” Andrew Clements, The Guardian

Pianist Denes Varjon will not be able to join to our concert because of health problems he had. The program had been revised as follows.

The Classics from the Hungarians

Zsolt Hamar, conductor
Kristof Barati, violin

J. Haydn Symphony No.100 in G major “Military”
W.A. Mozart Concerto for Violin No.2 in D major, KV.21
W.A. Mozart Symphony No.40 in G minor, KV.550

“Conductor Zsolt Hamar‘s approach to the opera reminded me of István Kertesz, one of the most authoritative interpreters of the Bartók masterpiece. Hamar gave us a rendition of strong lyrical imprint, which, far from highlighting gloomy shadows or exasperating the timbric and harmonic contrasts, exalted the transparency of the orchestral writing, unfolded the majestic burst of some melodies (the opening of the fifth door, for example) into abandonments of intense but restrained cantabiles. It is a veritable love story the one that Hamar tells.” Opera Britannia

“As soloist in the Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No.1, Kristóf Baráti started at the other extreme of audibility, his honeyed tone and intense intimacy willing the orchestra into submission. With his delicate sculpting of phrases and welcome injections of expressive breathing space, Baráti brought a degree of care and fragility that was all too absent from the rest of the programme.” The Guardian, September 2016

From Classic to Romantic

kazem-abdullah-1-kopyaKazem Abdullah, conductor
Martin Stadtfeld, piano

L. van Beethoven Concerto for Piano No.2 in B flat major, Op.19
S. Rachmaninov Symphony No.3 in A minor, Op.44

Abdullah struck considerably relaxed tempos, slowed the momentum as best he could and found a reasonably good balance between strings and winds. The funeral rhythm in the opening movement had enough weight, the melodic content of inner movements unfolded under Abdullah with simple cantabile delicacy and renounced the smoothed euphony’s sake to the ironic and bizarre, the romantic reminiscences’ distorting turns. That sounded nice and cultured, but also quite smooth. The extremely long, enigmatic and dazzling introduction to the finale, and the following large eruptions of sound Abdullah kept well under control.” Pedro Obiera, Aachener Zeitung

Stadtfeld presents an album that is both wonderfully inspired per se, but also inspiring for the listener. The manner in which he revives the fervent creative genius of young Mozart testifies to his profound understanding of these works.” Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung
